Acids in our food and drink and from our stomach dissolve our tooth enamel.
We call this tooth erosion.
This wear of tooth enamel leads to sensitive teeth and can lead to cavities. As the enamel becomes thinner, the appearance of your teeth also changes.
Front teeth become thinner and more translucent or develop ragged edges.
Teeth become increasingly yellowish (locally) or the teeth develop dark spots.
How does tooth erosion occur?
Acid erosion is mainly caused by acids from our foods.
These acids dissolve your teeth.
It is not only about how many acidic products you eat and drink, but also the number of times you eat and drink them.
The way you eat and drink also affects it.
For example, do you wait to swallow until the prick is off the drink?
Or do you swish a drink around in your mouth for taste?
This keeps the acid in your mouth longer.
Stomach acid can also cause Acid Wear.
Vomiting and burping cause stomach acid to enter your mouth.
The more often this happens, the stronger the erosion occurs.
Recognizing tooth erosion
You usually only notice Acid Wear at an advanced stage.
For example, when you experience symptoms when eating or drinking, or the appearance of your teeth changes.
Often the tooth enamel has already disappeared by then.
Saliva neutralizes
Saliva protects your teeth from tooth erosion.
It neutralizes acids from food and drinks.
Some medications or certain diseases, such as diabetes, can inhibit your saliva production.
This makes your teeth especially susceptible to erosion.
More tooth erosion in young people?
Young people drink more often and more soft drinks, sports drinks, other mixed drinks and fruit juices than adults.
As a result, young people in particular are more likely to suffer from tooth erosion.
Preventing tooth erosion
To prevent your tooth enamel from thinning, you can pay attention to your diet and limit the number of times you eat and drink in a day.
Of course, keeping your teeth clean is also important.
During your visit, our dental hygienist will be happy to give you tips on how to properly care for your teeth.
And can discuss your diet with you.
In our practice we work with the Gewoon Gaaf prevention method.
This prevention method from the Ivory Cross is for children ages 0 to 18 and their parents/caregivers. Want to read more?
